The freeware that I would like to strongly recommend is Handbrake. HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder, available for MacOS X

Supported Sources:

• Any DVD-like source: VIDEO_TS folder, DVD image or real DVD (unencrypted–protection methods including CSS are not supported internally and must be handled externally with third-party software and libraries), and some .VOB and .TS files

• Most any multimedia file it can get libavformat to read and libavcodec to decode.

First of all, let’s get the best of Windows apps that are also available on the Mac.

1 – VLC Media Player – http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

THE media player for any platform. Handles anything you throw at it, including DVD media, and it’s fast. I’ve personally been using it for a year plus and nothing even comes close to competing with it. Screw those codec packs, here’s the world famous VLC.

2 – Firefox – http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Firefox may not be as necessary as it was on Windows because we are now on Mac, without IE, Mac users are a lot less likely to get spyware and trouble.  Still, Firefox is a lot more compatible than Safari, not to mention the tons of useful plug-ins you can addon to Firefox.  So, it’s a must have.
